Training An Oily Scalp With Dry Shampoo

Hello Gorgeous! Are you someone who washes your hair daily due to an oily scalp? Many of my frequent washers have asked me how to train their hair to be less oily. My answer is always: wash less. Why? When you wash daily, you strip your scalp of its natural oils. After a wash your scalp produces oils to replenish the oils you just stripped out of your hair. When you wash less your scalp will not overcompensate by producing new oils daily, and it will find a normal balance. However, all of this is easier said then done. To train your scalp to produce less oil, you need weeks for your scalp to adjust to a new routine. As it turns out, we happen to have just that amount of time. Can anyone think of a better time to train their hair to be less oily? #quarantine2020

I want to start by saying that I do not believe it is a bad thing to wash your hair every day. Some people must wash daily due to scalp conditions, workplace hazards, or other reasons, and that is okay. There are the obvious downfalls to frequent washing such as a dryer scalp, cost of daily shampoo and conditioner use, color fading, added daily strand loss, use of water and energy to blow dry, time, etc. But if it works for you, and you can deal with the minor downfalls, keep on doing it because it isn’t necessarily bad for you or your hair.

For those of us who want to be able to go several days between washes, you will absolutely need to find a dry shampoo that works for you. You must decide what kind of dry shampoo you prefer and I break it down into three categories: powders, aerosol sprays, or mists. I also recommend taking your hair color into consideration when choosing a dry shampoo. Some aerosol sprays or powders leave a white residue on dark hair and can make blonde hair look chalky.

Powder

If you are dealing with a very oily scalp, I find that a powder usually soaks up the most oil and adds volume at the same time (bonus). dpHue Apple Cider Vinegar Dry Shampoo Powder is perfect for all hair types and colors while working to detoxify the scalp, which helps balance oil production.

Aerosol

Sometimes, an aerosol dry shampoo can do more than just soak up oil and make your hair look clean. A dry shampoo can add moisture and shine, texture and grit, add a fantastic fragrance, or all the above. dpHue Apple Cider Vinegar Dry Shampoo is a definite go-to for me. It is super lightweight, has a great clean fresh lavender scent, and leaves no residue at all. Your scalp feels clean and refreshed and oil is absorbed.

Mist

Finally, a mist can be a great option for all hair types and colors. One of my absolute favorite dry shampoos is R+Co Spiritualized Dry Shampoo Mist. This mist is actually a micellar cleansing formula, so after spritzing this on your roots, you activate the cleansing powders by massaging the product on the scalp. It completely dries after about 30-40 seconds, just make sure to shake well before use to redistribute the powders. This is great after a workout, and you can even hit your roots with a blow dryer for that “I just washed my hair” look. I swear by this dry shampoo and I can’t live without it. Bonus: Mists and powders are environmentally friendly unlike aerosol sprays.

After you have found the perfect dry shampoo to help you through each day, you are ready to begin this journey. If you are a daily washer, try going 1-2 days without a wash at first. After your next wash, try going 3-4 days and continue this pattern until you notice a decrease in oil production. You can also try adding dry shampoo to your fresh clean hair after a wash to prevent oil from building up.

Pro Tip

When you do wash, because you have been going longer between washes and have a heavier oil build up, you may need to shampoo twice. This means shampoo the scalp, lather, rinse, and REPEAT. By shampooing twice, you are ensuring you wash away all the oils so that you can start fresh, and ultimately go longer as that oil builds up on the scalp. The second wash will not require as much product, so be conscious of how much is used. You will be going 4-5 glorious days without a wash in no time.
