Hello lovely clients! I hope it is not weird to say—I cannot wait to get my hands on your hair again! As much as I miss being behind the chair, I’m glad we are all doing our part and staying home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although I can’t be there to do your hair physically, I can still be here for you virtually and some of you have already reached out. The one question you all seem to have for me is what do I do about my roots during this time!?
First, I realize some of you are still working and are on video calls and must be seen. What I recommend you do is buy a lovely root concealer; it is your new best friend. Pro Tip: Only use product where it is needed such as the hairline around the face and on the part. This will help you get the most out of your root concealer. I have tried so many different brands and I am going to recommend some of my favorites below.
For brighter blondes, or highlights, I love the Anastasia Beverly Hills Tinted Brow Gel in Blonde. The small applicator makes it easier to work with when touching up highlights or adding brightness around the face. For a darker or all over blonde, check out dpHue Root Concealer Spray in light, medium, or dark blonde.
For my brunettes and black-haired beauties, again I recommend dpHue Root Concealer Spray in your shade. Oribe Airbrush Root Touch Up Spray in Dark Brown or Black works wonders and smells amazing too. Just focus the product on those grays, and make sure you protect the skin on your face from the color.
For Reds, I like a powder root concealer Color Wow Root Cover Up in Red. It looks the most natural and blends beautifully with bright hues. It comes with a double-sided small brush to apply the powder to the root area. Just seal the powder in place with any hair spray.
While you wait for your root concealer to arrive in the mail, time can bring on desperation. I am also here for you with some clever DIY hair hacks.
What you need:
- Makeup Brushes (shadow or concealer brush will work)
- Mascara Wand (don’t have one? Repurpose an old one by washing it and reusing it)
- Any Clear Hair Gel (pomade will work)
- Eyeshadow in your hair color (taupe/gold/tan, browns/blacks, and reds/coppers)
You can first try to use the eyeshadow on your root area of concern with the eyeshadow and a makeup brush. I have found some shadows work, and some do not work by giving the hair enough pigment to cover roots. It depends on the shadow but give it a try and see what you think. Make sure you seal the shadow with a hairspray to keep it in place. If this doesn’t work, making a gel will be a better option.
To make a root concealer gel:
- Use any hair gel and place in a small container that can be sealed for later.
- Crush eyeshadow into a fine powder and add it to the gel and mix. You may have to play with the ratio of gel to powder to find the right color and consistency. Fun Tip: I have also experimented with cocoa powder and charcoal powder mixed with gel for dark hair.
- Use a mascara wand (or makeup brush) to apply mixture on root area of concern.
- Make sure you use your applicator to blend the gel into your roots and let it dry for all day wear.

I understand that some of you are looking for answers and are desperate. I even understand that some of you may turn to a box color during this time. I just want you to know that if you can’t wait, I will be here for you when you come back to me without judgement.
My professional advice is that box colors are formulated with a “one size fits all approach” It is not formulated with the individual in mind and therefore results will always vary. Not to mention the metallic dyes are harmful to you and your hair and will be costly to fix if anything goes wrong. Color corrections START at $280 with me and can take anywhere from 4-8 hours or more. What you decide to do is up to you. I think the most important thing to remember is that we will all get through this. We will return to normal eventually, and I will be there to do your roots as soon as I can.
If you MUST use a box, please for the love of everything avoid metallic box dyes and place an order with me through dpHue. I can order you a root touch up kit and get it shipped to you for free while earning a commission.
If you are going to consider purchasing one of the recommended products, I would appreciate it if you could use my link or shop my online store where I can ship to you for free. Anything helps to support my small business during this time of uncertainty. All you have to do is click either link, click the product and purchase directly from either my online store or the affiliate website, and I earn a commission without stocking inventory. Thank you so much for your continued support during this time. We will get through this.
